Originally published in 1975, the papers collected in this volume review African pastoralism in both West and East Africa, in relation to economy, ecology, social and community organisation, kinship, inter-group relations, modern administrative attitudes and policies and problems of development. Early in his career, Theodore Monod was made professor at the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle and founded the Institut Français d' Afrique Noire in Senegal. He became a member of the Acadamie des sciences d'outre-mer in 1949, member of the Acadamie de Marine in 1957, and member of the Acadamie des Sciences in 1963. In 1960 he was one of the founders of the World Academy of Art and Science.
