This book introduces the reader to modern covariant electrodynamics by means of solved problems and exercises relating to the motion of charged particles and the generation, propagation, and confinement of radiation. The exercises are intended as a tool to bridge the gap between analytic theories and physical phenomena and will assist the young researcher in developing her/his understanding of the real world. The choice of representative examples has been carefully made with a view to enabling the reader to progress easily from a single example toward more general classes of phenomena. At the start of each chapter the principal required mathematical tools are listed, providing an insight into the technical difficulties to be confronted in that chapter. Particular emphasis is placed on discussion of fundamental experiments and phenomena confirming special relativity, such as the Wilson-Wilson experiment and the Stewart-Tolman, Sagnac, Compton, and Mössbauer effects. Throughout, the book aims to highlight the practical applications of electrodynamics. It will be ideal for master and graduate students in both Physics and Engineering.

Relativistic Foundations of Covariant Electrodynamics.- Electromagnetic Tests of Relativity.- Electrostatics and magnetostatics.- Electromagnetic waves.- Propagation modes.- Motion of Charged Particles.- Lenses and Traps.- Accelerators.- Fields from Moving Charges.- Constitutive relations.- Mathematical methods.

Salvatore Capozziello is Full Professor in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Department of Physics, University of Naples, Italy and President of the Italian Society for General Relativity and Gravitation (SIGRAV). His scientific activity is focused essentially on research topics in Cosmology, Relativistic Astrophysics, and Physics of Gravitation. He has published more than 350 papers in international journals and is the author of monographs on extended theories of gravity, gravitational lensing, cosmology, and general relativity. Dr. Capozziello is Managing Editor of the International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics (World Scientific).  He is also a member of the editorial boards of the Central European Journal of Physics (Versita Springer/De Gruyter Open) and Journal of Modern Physics (Scientific Research Publishing) and until December 2012 was a member of the editorial board of The European Physical Journal C (Springer).
