This book addresses the highly relevant subject of emerging pollutants, which are especially alarming since most of the available treatment technologies are unable to degrade them. It discusses the sources of these pollutants and their fate in the environment, and the main tools available for their analysis. It also describes the representative environmental matrices (air, soil and water) and appropriate analytical methods for each matrix. Furthermore, it examines aspects of toxicology, chemometrics, sample preparation and green analytical chemistry.

As such, it provides a broad overview of the potential analytical approaches for monitoring and controlling emerging pollutants.

This book fills a gap in the literature, and is a valuable resource for all professionals concerned with emerging pollutant control in real-world situations.

Chapter 1: What are Emerging Pollutants (EPs) and their Fate on the Environment.- Chapter 2: Fundamental Aspects of Analytical Chemistry for Environmental Analysis.- Chapter 3: Analytical Techniques.- Chapter 4: The Main Environmental Matrices: Air, Soil and Water.- Chapter 5: Degradation Processes of EPs.- Chapter 6: General Remarks and Conclusions.- Glossary.

Prof. Dr. Sílvio Vaz Jr holds a BSc degree in Chemistry, a MSc degree in Physical Chemistry and a DSc degree in Analytical Chemistry from University of São Paulo, Brazil, and a doctorate degree in Chemistry from University of Coimbra, Portugal. He was director and partner of two private analytical laboratories related to environmental analysis. Since 2010, he is a research scientist at the state-owned Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) working on the development of renewable chemicals from biomass and analytical chemistry applied to bioenergy and environment. He is a current member of IUPAC and of the American Chemical Society and has published articles and books related to green chemistry, biomass chemistry and environmental and analytical chemistry.

Provides an in-depth account of emerging pollutants and their mitigation Describes analytical techniques and methods to analyse emerging pollutants in air, soil and water Examines physicochemical properties and toxicology of emerging pollutants
