Modern Earthquake Engineering for Offshore and Onland Structures. Promoting Real World Engineering Toward State of the Art
Publication date:
848 p. · 15.5x23.5 cm · Hardback

This book addresses applications of earthquake engineering for both offshore and land-based structures. It is self-contained as a reference work and covers a wide range of topics, including topics related to engineering seismology, geotechnical earthquake engineering, structural engineering, as well as special contents dedicated to design philosophy, determination of ground motions, shock waves, tsunamis, earthquake damage, seismic response of offshore and arctic structures, spatial varied ground motions, simplified and advanced seismic analysis methods, sudden subsidence of offshore platforms, tank liquid impacts during earthquakes, seismic resistance of non-structural elements, and various types of mitigation measures, etc. The target readership includes professionals in offshore and civil engineering, officials and regulators, as well as researchers and students in this field.

Introduction to modern earthquake engineering.- Offshore and land-based structures.- Measurement of earthquakes.- Essentials of dynamic analysis.- Computer based dynamic analysis and modal testing.- Essentials of soil dynamics.- Determination of site-specific earthquake ground motions.- Representation of earthquake ground motions.- Seismic response and earthquake effects.- Structural and foundation modelling.- Seismic design philosophy.- Seismic analysis methods.- Seismic response of non-structural elements.- Seismic response of tanks due to sloshing.- Influence of fluid-structure interactions on seismic response.- Influence of ice-structure interactions on seismic response.- Human body response to ground motions.- Sudden subsidence and its assessment.- Mitigation of seismic response – ductility, elevation control, damping apparatus, base isolation and dynamic absorbers.- Seismic retrofit for structures.- Tsunami.

Dr. Junbo Jia is an engineering expert at Aker Solutions, Norway. He has extensive experience on marine structural assessment accounting for dynamics and nonlinearity, earthquake engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydrodynamic analysis, structural wind engineering and engineering designs of marine structures. He has been extensively involved in analyses and designs in offshore and energy industries, associated with different types of offshore and onshore structures and foundations. He is currently a committee member of ISO TC67/SC7 Offshore Structures and an invited expert group member of Eurocode 3. He has been invited as guest professor and key speaker by various organizations and research institutes. Dr. Junbo Jia has received several national and international awards such as the Vice Admiral E.L. Cochrane award from the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and the Best Paper Award from the journal Ships and Offshore Structures. He is the sole author of three comprehensive scientific monographs by Springer. All the three books receive an extensive amount of downloads based on Springer official data. He is also the editor of a book volume by CRC press (with J.K. Paik). He is listed in several global versions of the Who's Who publications. Dr. Jia is an elected member of Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences.
