Biochar as a Multipurpose Platform: With Applications in Energy, Environment, and Materials discusses all the most cutting-edge biochar applications, including environmental remediation, energy storage, composites, and catalyst production, thus providing an expert overview of recent trends in biochar research. Biochar is a solid residue that is recovered after the thermal decomposition of biomasses inert atmosphere. Biochar has been used for many decades for soil applications. Nonetheless, biochar is far more than a mere soil amendment.

Section 1. Overview on Biochar 1. Biochar productive systems 2. Temperature effect on biochar physiochemical properties 3. Biochar chemical modifications 4. Biochar activation processes Section 2. Biochar in energy storage systems 5. Biochar based anodic materials for lithium and sodium batteries 6. High surface area as effective electrochemical material for supercapacitive applications 7. Tailored biochar as tool for the next generation of fuel cells 8. Old fuel to new one: biochar use in direct fuel cells Section 3. Engineered Biochar for advanced applications 9. Biochar based catalysts 10. Nanostructured biochar for water remediation 11. Biochar containing polymeric composites 12. Biochar containing construction materials

Prof. Alberto Tagliaferro got his degree in Nuclear Engineering and his PhD in Physics at Polytechnic of Turin. He is Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Science and Technology of Polytechnic of Turin. He is head of the Carbon Group, a research group he founded in 2002. His research interests are currently focused on biochar and carbon dots production and applications. He is Adjunct Professor at OntarioTech University and editor of Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology (CREST) by Taylor and Francis, Reviews on Advanced Materials Science by De Gruyter and Micromachines by MDPI. He is Chair of the Education Committee of IUVSTA (International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications).
Mauro Giorcelli, graduated in Electronic Engineering in 2004 and got his PhD in Physics in 2009. He is Assistant Professor position in Material and Science Technology Department at Politecnico di Torino (Italy). Now he is well recognized at international level as Biochar expert for innovative applications with a more 15 years’ experience in the field of carbon materials and composites. He has published over 90 articles in international journals (1400 citations). His main expertise is in the field of low-cost carbon materials derived by recycled materials, in particular carbon materials derived from biomasses (Biochar). He has a widespread collaboration network in Europe, Asia and Canada for Biochar production and applications. He is executive member of Italian Association of Biochar (Ichar) and Scientific Consultant of European Biochar Industry (EBI). He is member of INSTM (Istituto Italiano Scienze e Tecnologie dei Materiali).
Dr. Mattia Bartoli has always performed at the highest levels throughout his education and training as proved by research outputs with 82 published per-reviewed paper in top journals (H-index 22, ORCID 0000-0002-4678-0212). He worked to Biorefinery research Group hosted by University of Alberta developing new mater
