The second edition of Stroke Medicine incorporates considerable advances in the treatment of stroke that have occurred since the first edition published. This provides an up-to-date and easily accessible source of information on all aspects of stroke care, from acute care through to rehabilitation and secondary prevention. The new edition includes some additional updates on cardiac investigation of stroke, due to novel methods for detecting atrial fibrillation, and new trial data has been added to the chapter on Treatment of Stroke. The book includes numerous illustrations and tables presenting information in an easy-to-follow way and is designed to be used by the practising physician as a practical handbook of stroke care.
Hugh Markus is Professor of Stroke Medicine at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, UK. He qualified in medicine from Cambridge and Oxford Universities and trained in Oxford, Nottingham and London before being appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Neurology at King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry and King's College Hospital in 1994. In 2000 he moved to St George's University of London as Professor of Neurology. His research interests include the genetic basis of stroke and cerebral small vessel disease. He runs a national referral service for CADASIL and other monogenic forms of stroke. He is involved in a number of international collaborative projects trying to identify genetic risk factors for different types of stroke and was principal investigator on the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium 2 Ischaemic Stroke study. Anthony Pereira is Consultant Neurologist at the Department of Neurology, St George's Hospital, London, UK. Geoffrey Cloud is Consultant Stroke Physician at the Department of Neurology, St George's Hospital, London, UK. He has a clinical interest in stroke prevention, acute stroke treatment, and the recovery and rehabilitation of stroke patients. Dr Cloud qualified from the medical college of St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and trained in general, geriatric and stroke medicine in London before being appointed a consultant stroke physician and honorary senior lecturer in the department of clinical neurosciences at St George's Hospital in March 2004.
