Thrombosis and Hemostasis in Cancer, 1st ed. 2019 Cancer Treatment and Research Series, Vol. 179
Langue : Anglais

In this book, leaders in the field explore our current understanding of thrombosis and hemostasis in cancer and address key questions on the subject. Among the topics discussed are the mechanisms that cancers use to activate the coagulation system, and those by means of which an activated coagulation system can lead to more aggressive cancer growth. Clinical chapters examine the role of thrombosis prophylaxis and treatment, central line-associated thrombosis, and cancer-associated hemorrhage. Subsequent chapters deal with the management of chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia, anticoagulation in the presence of brain metastases, and other unique challenges in the interaction of thrombosis and hemostasis in cancer.
Thrombosis and Hemostasis in Cancer. Scope of the Problem and Overview.- Pathophysiology 1. Mechanisms of Thrombosis in Cancer Patients.- Pathophysiology 3. The role of platelets in cancer biology.- The risk of thrombosis in cancer. Clinical factors & possible role of primary prophylaxis.- Biomarkers of cancer-associated thromboembolism.- Thrombotic Risk from Chemotherapy and Other Cancer Therapies.- Treatment of VTE In Cancer. Historical Perspective and evolving role of the DOACs.- Etiology and Management of Upper Extremity, Central line associated thrombosis.- Management of Thrombocytopenia In Cancer Patients.- Microangiopathy in Cancer. Causes, Consequences, and Management.- Thrombosis in the Philadelphia chromosome-negative Myeloproliferative Neoplasms.- Anticoagulation in the setting of primary and metastatic brain tumors.- Hemorrhage in the cancer patient. APML and other specific high risk situations.
Gerald A Soff MD is the Chief of the Hematology Service and co-Director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He previously was the Chief of the Hematology/Oncology Division at SUNY Downstate Medical Center (2006-2008), and had been on the faculty of the Feinberg School of Medicine - Northwestern University (1991-2005). Dr. Soff’s clinical practice is focused on the hematologic complications of cancer and cancer therapy, particularly thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, and other coagulation disorders. His basic science research has included studies of vascular cells, angiogenesis, and angiogenesis inhibition. He is a clinical research leader in the study and validation of the use of direct oral anticoagulants for treatment and prophylaxis of cancer associated thrombosis. Dr. Soff has published over 70 original research papers, as well as numerous invited review articles and book chapters. Since 2014, Dr. Soff has been a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Cancer-Associated Venous Thromboembolic Disease panel. Previously, from 2011 to 2014, he had been on the NCCN Cancer and Chemotherapy-Induced Anemia Panel. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology Committee on Training and served as the Medical Education Subcommittee Chair from 2013-2018. He has mentored and continues to mentor numerous students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty, to facilitate their career development.
