(Together with a mathematical commentary on some of Riemann's work) Great mathematicians change the way their successors look at certain partS' of mathematics. It is rare, however, that a hundred years after a man's work, his ideas and methods are learnt and used by people in the field in essentially the same form in which he left them. Riemann's mathematics has this quality of per manence to an astonishing degree. His work has been analysed, amplified and generalised in many ways in many fields, but a good part of his mathematical output has withstood the test of time and the search for new perspectives remar kably weIl. This is not to imply that new perspectives have not been found but simply that in many instances, Riemann's own approach has not been super seded definitively. This volume contains a reprint of the second edition of "Bernhard Riemanns gesammelte mathematische Werke und wissenschaftlicher Nachlass" (Leipzig, Teubner, 1892, edited by Heinrich Weber with help from Richard Dedekind, the first edition was published in 1876) and of "Bernhard Riemanns gesammelte ma thematische Werke. Nachträge" (Leipzig, Teubner, 1902, edited by Max Noether and Wilhelm Wirtinger). Riemann was weIl served by his mathematical editors and this material is taken over without change or further commentary. The volume contains a few other pieces as weIl. C. L.
