This book discusses different types of alternative fuels, including biodiesel, alcohol, synthetic fuels, compressed natural gas (CNG) and its blend with hydrogen, HCNG, and provides detailed information on the utilization of these alternative fuels in internal combustion (IC) engines. Further, it presents methods for production of these alternative fuels and explores advanced combustion techniques, such as low-temperature and dual-fuel combustion, using alternative fuels. It includes a chapter on the soot morphology of biodiesel, which focuses on the toxicity. There are also four chapters on hydrogen-fueled engines, which discuss use of hydrogen in IC engines and also provide important information on the methodologies. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and practicing engineers alike.
Dr. Akhilendra Pratap Singh received his M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India in 2010 and 2016 respectively. Dr. Singh has worked as a CSIR Pool Scientist at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur since 2014. His areas of research include advanced low-temperature combustion; optical diagnostics with special reference to engine endoscopy and PIV; combustion diagnostics; engine-emission measurement; particulate characterization and its control; and alternative fuels. He has published more than 20 peer-reviewed international journal papers and 10 peer-reviewed international conference papers in addition to 10 book chapters and editing three books. He is a member of the editorial board of the ‘Journal of Energy, Environment and Sustainability’.
Prof. Avinash K. Agarwal joined the IIT Kanpur in 2001. His areas of interest are IC engines, combustion, alternative fuels, conventional fuels, opticaldiagnostics, laser ignition, HCCI, emission and particulate control, and large-bore engines. He has published 230+ international journal and conference papers. Prof. Agarwal is a fellow of the SAE (2012), ASME (2013), ISEES (2015) and INAE (2015). He has received several awards such as the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Engineering Sciences-2016; Rajib Goyal Prize 2015; NASI-Reliance Industries Platinum Jubilee Award-2012; and INAE Silver Jubilee Young Engineer Award-2012.
Dr Rashmi Avinash Agarwal is a young scientist fellow at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK). She completed her doctoral degree at the IITK in 2014 with a dissertation on “Coordination Polymers of Transition Metal Ions with Benzimidazole Based Ligands: Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal (SC-SC) Transformations, Gas Storage and Magnetic Studies”. Her fields of interest include supramolecular chemistry, coordination chemistry, coordination polymers, organic synthesis, inorganic sy
